Ambedkar Manimandapam

The Ambedkar Manimandapam built on the Beach Road, Pondicherry in remembrance of the Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar.

Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (April 14, 1891 - December 6, 1956), also known as Babasaheb, was an Indian nationalist, jurist, Dalit, political leader, activist, philosopher, thinker, anthropologist, historian, orator, prolific writer, economist, scholar, editor, revolutionary and the revivalist of Buddhism in India. He was also the chief architect of the Indian Constitution. Born into a poor Untouchable family, Ambedkar spent his whole life fighting against social discrimination, the system of Chaturvarna - the Hindu categorization of human society into four varnas and the Indian caste system. He is also credited with having sparked the Dalit Buddhist movement. Ambedkar has been honoured with the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award.

In the 1980s, with the constitution of the department of social sciences, the Institute also took interest to the evolution and dynamics of the Indian society. The development of research and the necessity to support it with modern methodologies and instruments, led to the creation of a laboratory of geomatics (LAIG) in the 1990s. With it, the Institute acquired modern tools for the representation and analysis of the spatial and temporal interrelations between these societies and their environment. The installation of the LAIG as a common tool greatly helped in developing new objects of research.Overcoming numerous social and financial obstacles, Ambedkar became one of the first "untouchables" to obtain a college education in India. Eventually earning law degrees and multiple doc torates for his study and research in law, economics and political science from Columbia University and the London School of Economics, Ambedkar returned home a famous scholar and practiced law for a few years before publishing journals advocating political rights and social freedom for India's untouchables. He has been given the degree of Bodhisattva by Indian Buddhist Bhikkues.
