Geography
The geography of Pondicherry is the same as that of coastal Tamil Nadu. Pondicherry's average elevation is at sea level, and a number of sea inlets, referred to as "backwaters" can be found. One such inlet, Chunnambar is a popular tourist destination. Pondicherry experiences coastal erosion. The city is protected against the sea by a 1.25 mile (2-km) long seawall, first completed by the French in 1735, which reaches a height of 27 feet above sea level. A weather-beaten cement plaque with the year 1952 is still visible along a section of the seawall. The seawall is protected from the direct onslaught of waves by rows of granite boulders which are reinforced every year to stop erosion. Whenever gaps appear or the stones sink into the sand, the Government adds more boulders to keep it strong.
The climate of Pondicherry is again, very similar to that of coastal Tamil Nadu. Pondicherry experiences hot and humid climate for the maximum part of the year, with temperatures varying between 26° C and 38° C. The summer season is mostly dry with a clear and blue sky. The summer season extends from March till July, and the temperature varies between 24.50° C to 38° C. For tourists the ideal time to visit Pondicherry is between the months of March and October.
The Northeast Monsoon or Retreating Monsoon sets in during the middle of October, and Pondicherry gets the bulk of its annual rainfall during the period from October to December. The annual average rainfall is 1240 mm. winters are mild, with highs of 30° C and lows often dipping to around 18 - 20° C.
The winter season in Pondicherry starts in the month of November and is effected by the northeast monsoon. The monsoon showers cool the days and nights. The monsoon shower on the west coast of the land makes the weather pleasant in the months of July-August. The winters are cool compared to the summers but the temperature never falls below 20 degrees.
The monsoon season in Pondicherry is very small compared to other parts f India. The region receives good rainfall during the months from November to January and from July to September. The percentage of humidity is very high in Pondicherry, which is very common in coastal areas. The high level of humidity makes the summer season uncomfortable.
